The MotoGP 2008 season will be starting in T-minus 26 days! The first race of the season is in Doha, Qatar (Losail International Circuit). Not only am I excited about another season starting, the opening race will be historic for not only the MotoGP class, but for ALL of professional motorcycle racing as a whole. The racers will not have the convenience of the desert sun, or natural bright daylight. The racers will not be wearing dark tinted visors. The bikes will even have a headlight. For the first time EVER, the race will not be in the morning or early afternoon hours. Instead, this will be a night race. How cool and crazy is that!?
Imagine yourself sitting on top an 800cc motor going over 200+ MPH in the night time hours with only the support of extremely bright floodlights (Musco Mirtran Lighting System). I hope those engineers and safety inspectors double checked their work once, checked it again, then again five other times at the least (There have been a total of 46 deaths in the MotoGP class since its foundation in 1949…and NO, there is no connection with that quantity and the number of my favorite MotoGP racer).
The good news is that the track has been tested at night. In 2006, Kenny Roberts Jr, Loris Capirossi, and Valentino Rossi rode street bikes around the circuit under “football-stadium” type lamps. On February 27, 2008 the first official night test will begin so that the racers can become accustomed to the lighting. Hopefully, the race will be safe and at the same time exciting! GOOOOO! Rossi!
(FIA Formula One’s first world championship night race will be held September 28th on a new street circuit in Singapore.)
